Non-native settlers first came to the Gaithersburg area in 1765 and named their settlement Log Town. A man named Benjamin Gaither inherited land in the area, and the settlement became known as Gaithersburg by the 1850s. Gaithersburg was officially incorporated in 1878, and the city's B&O railroad station helped boost the local economy.
Today, about 64,000 people live in Gaithersburg, making it the fourth-largest city in Maryland.
